Does the propeller shaft need to be removed to replace stern tube seals?
Whether the propeller shaft must be removed to replace stern tube seals depends on the scope of maintenance. If your vessel’s chrome steel liner needs replacement, removing the shaft is practical to allow direct installation of the Lagersmit® seal into the housing in dry dock. -
Not necessary to remove the propeller shaft to replace the stern seal
You don’t need to remove the propeller shaft to replace the stern seal. Our engineers use advanced bonding techniques to replace stern tube seals efficiently, either afloat or in dry dock. Under normal conditions, we complete the bonding process within three to four days. -
Adding a distance ring to your Lagersmit® stern tube seal systems
Our expert service engineers can assist you with many stages of the maintenance cycle for your stern tube seals, including supplying & installing a distance ring. The distance ring can be fitted without removing the propeller shaft – making the process both time-efficient and cost-effective. -
Vessel’s chrome steel liners need to replaced because of deep grooves or pitting
Stern tube seals need to run on a fresh surface. Most of the time the liner can be machined. If machining isn’t possible anymore within the given tolerance. We also supply chrome steel liners for all standard systems. Our chrome steel liners are compatible with Lagersmit Supreme® seal systems. -

We also install and commission original *Lagersmit® stern tube systems if required by our customers. In this particular case we installed the entire AFT sealing system from Lagersmit®. The Fwd sealing rings were our own Ocean Seals® which are compatible with makers system.
