Does the propeller shaft need to be removed to replace Kemel seals?

This depends on what other maintenance work is required. For example, if your vessel’s chrome steel liners or bearings need to be replaced, it may make sense to remove the propeller shaft and install the Kobelco or Kemel stern tube seals directly in the housing. This maintenance operation is carried out in a dry dock.

However, it’s not necessary to remove the propeller shaft to replace the stern seal. Our expertise in stern tube seal bonding allows us to replace the stern tube seals without removing the propeller shaft. This can be carried out by our service engineers either afloat or in dry dock. Under normal conditions, we can replace both the forward and aft Kemel or Kobelco stern tube seals using bonding in three to four days.
